These tiny inserts, each barely an inch across, were almost overlooked as scraps in a bag of old machine lace. Certainly they demonstrate that even beginning with the same pattern no two pieces of handmade lace ever are truly identical.
We'll never know if these were made by different lacemakers, or the same lacemaker on different days in different moods. Each has its own personality.
